obedience

obedience
   1. (virtue)
This word (from the Latin oboedire, meaning "to pay attention" or "to hear") basically means voluntary submission to authority. "Obedience" is used in different contexts: (1) Christ's obedience to God the Father in accepting thecross (see CCC 615); (2) a Christian's obedience of faith in accepting divine revelation (see CCC 144); and (3) children's obedience to their parents as prescribed by the fourth commandment. (See CCC 2214-2220)
   2. (vow)
This term (from the Latin oboedire, meaning "to pay attention" or "to hear") refers to the vow professed by members of reilgious communities as an expression of their commitment to follow the evangelical counsels in conformity with a rule approved by the Church. (See CCC 915)
